The Marlborough District Council will continue free parking on Thursdays at the Wynen St carpark, in Blenheim, until the end of the month.
Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman said the free parking on Thursdays experiment proved so popular with shoppers and retailers the council would continue it for another month.
The initial trial was planned only until the end of last month, but feedback from people using the car park, and from the CBD retailers, had been so positive that the arrangement would continue until the end of September, he said.
The idea of the trial was to boost activity in downtown Blenheim at a time when it was quietest, the cold-weather weeks when people seemed less inclined to come into town.
"We're trying this as an experiment for the retailers to see how much difference it makes to them," Mr Sowman said.
"They're telling us they're seeing a boost in the pedestrian count through town, and the shoppers I've spoken to seem pretty pleased with the arrangement."
Another spinoff was that the promotion had encouraged people who had never previously used the Wynen St car park to discover how conveniently near centre of town it was located, Mr Sowman said.
People using the Wynen St car park on Thursdays during the period of the trial do not need to use the pay-and-display ticket machines.
