Hard work and determination has paid off for Blenheim rock band Arm the Reckless, and has seen them win the national peoples choice award for the 2013 Smokefreerockquest.
The Skinny Mobile Peoples Choice Award will see Mitch Alderlieste, Hayden Batt and Liam Hardman, who are all in year 12 at Marlborough Boys' College, travel to Auckland on Friday for the national final to be held on Saturday.
"We're so stoked. We tried so hard and got the whole community behind us and voting and we're just so thankful," Mitch said.
Although the boys would not be competing alongside the six acts who have made it to the final of the competition, they would be the opening act.
Arm the Reckless formed only about six months ago after meeting in their music class, and say it is hard work that saw them win the Marlborough regional final and reach the top 10 rockquest bands in New Zealand, and now take out the national peoples choice as well.
"We believe in ourselves - I mean that was our plan. If we hadn't worked this hard we would never had gotten this far . . . It's all got to do with hard work," Mitch said.
The award meant free flights and accommodation for the event on Saturday, and the boys were "stoked" to be going to Auckland, "where all the contacts are".
"Going to Auckland as a band feels pretty professional," Mitch said.
The trio said the support of their friends and family had also been instrumental in getting them to where they are.
