State Highway 1 south of Kaikoura was closed yesterday afternoon for more than an hour following an accident which saw a truck jack-knife across both lanes.
The accident happened at about 4.15pm in the Hundalees, near the Conway Flat.
Kaikoura Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Ian Walker said it was not often the whole road was shut. It was unfortunate for those stuck as many would have been on their way to catch flights, he said.
The southbound truck was carrying a flatbed of farm posts, which ended up all over the road and down the bank. The truck had hit a safety barrier on the right-hand side of the road before veering off across the road. The cab tipped over, however the driver escaped with minor injuries.
Kaikoura St John team manager Don Wright said the driver was a 57 year old from Wanganui. He suffered minor cuts to his right leg, he said.
Enquiries into the cause of the accident are continuing.
