Food firm rises from the ashes
The owners of a Blenheim wholesale food company lost most of their stock in a fire, but consider themselves lucky to have been back up and running within just four days.
Up Marketing Wholesale Food Distributors owners John Gilbert and Jason Clark moved to a new property at the Riverlands Industrial Estate near Blenheim after a fire at the premises they leased at Timandra Place on October 5.
They have a six-month lease at the new property in Manchester St.
Most of their stock was destroyed in the fire, caused by a switchboard malfunction, as well as a van which was parked in the garage.
Mr Clark said they were grateful for the support of their customers.
"It's actually been a really humbling experience," he said.
"Our customers have been very, very supportive."
Staff had been flat out since the fire, and Mr Gilbert had to give up a trip to the Bathurst motor-race in New South Wales at the weekend.
They hadn't had a day off since the fire and were not planning on having one any time soon, Mr Gilbert said.
The busy season was just starting for them and they were lucky they had managed to get everything stocked and running as quickly as they had.
"It's sheer luck this building was available," he said.
"We would be in serious trouble if it hadn't been."
The company supplies most outlets that sell food in Blenheim, including cafes, bars, rest homes, and catering firms.
