M is for missing
Police are looking for a thief in Blenheim who was last seen running away with the big ‘M' from McDonald's tucked under his arm.
Constable Andrew Holdaway said the golden letter was stolen from the side of the Blenheim McDonald's building on Main St about 4am on Sunday.
The thief was seen running south on Freswick St carrying the easily recognised letter.
A McDonald's spokeswoman said the theft was "remarkable".
While anti-social behaviour was known to happen at the 24-hour restaurant, she did not know of any other instances in New Zealand where the lit up ‘M' had been pulled off the building facade.
Security footage of the incident had not been reviewed yet, she said. There was no reward or voucher being offered for the return of the letter.
McDonald's staff were working with police to get the ‘M' back. If it was not found, a replacement would be ordered.
"McDonald's cannot exist without its ‘M'," she said. "We're hopeful it will come back to us."
Anyone with information is asked to contact Blenheim police on 03 578 5279 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
