A fundraiser to help pay for a new teacher at a Marlborough Sounds school was marred by the theft of two auction items.
Parent and organiser of the Linkwater School Fun Day Barbara Faulls said the theft of a Fudge Factory voucher and a pottery bowl was incredibly disappointing.
The items were part of a silent auction held at the Fun Day on Sunday.
Parents of students at the school had approached Marlborough businesses asking them to donate items or contribute services for the auction.
About 40 businesses chipped in and all of the items were on display.
There was always a frenzy of bidding before the auction closed but an opportunistic thief stepped in, Mrs Faulls said.
"They were there one minute and then they were gone," she said.
"It's such a mean-spirited thing for someone to do.
"We put so much effort into the day and for someone to feel it's their right to take something is so disappointing."
She was hoping the theft was an honest mistake and whoever took the items would return them.
