A yacht moored in the Marlborough Sounds has mysteriously sunk.

Marlborough harbourmaster Alex Van Wijngaarden said someone reported the sinking 15 metre yacht at Ruakaka Bay, in Queen Charlotte Sound, on Sunday. No-one was on the yacht when it sank, he said.

The owner of the boat was trying to get it salvaged as soon as he could. It would most likely happen this week or next week, Mr Van Wijngaarden said. The longer it stayed under the water, the worse the damage would be, he said. About 4m of the mast was still sticking out of the water yesterday.

An investigation into what caused the yacht to sink would be carried out when the boat was salvaged and brought to Picton, Mr Van Wijngaarden said.

Coastguard was not called out.

The owner of the yacht did not want to comment.
