A strong jolt was felt in Marlborough this afternoon.
A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck 5km south-west of Seddon at 1.45pm, at a depth of 21km.
It was followed a few minutes later by a 2.9 quake in the same area.
People as far as Wellington and Wairau Valley commented that they had felt the quake. One woman left a comment saying "Wow that made the heart race. The cat and dog went crazy."
Barbara Parker executive officer at Seddon School said the children were fine and carried on swimming and playing.
Vicki Carson a volunteer at the Awatere Community Trust, said staff were shaken but everyone is carrying on as usual and that this comes as a reminder to stay prepared.
