Blenheim dog owners can now wash their dogs, day or night, at a new DIY dog wash station.
Marlborough's first K9000 Dogwash Station opened yesterday for its first customer, a yellow labrador called Archie. The Vet Centre Marlborough in Redwood St has installed the coin and note-operated dog wash in a corner of their parking lot.
Vet Centre large animal retail manager Tony Smith said when he first mentioned the idea to people they thought he was joking.
"People didn't take me seriously when I mentioned a 24-hour, self-service dog wash," he said.
He said it was convenient for dog owners to wash their dogs after a walk along the Taylor River or the beach and especially for owners of larger breed dogs.
The washing cycle runs for 10 minutes and includes a shampoo, flea shampoo, conditioning rinse, rinse and blow dry - as well as a final cycle to disinfect the tub.
Mr Smith said they wanted to be sure the K9000 station was user-friendly and safe. It had the required resource consent and would be lit up at night for customer convenience,
K9000 Dogwash Systems NZ director Damian Curtain said that the system was designed for ease of use and convenience.
The Christchurch company started importing the Australian-made stations a year ago and now had 15 stations set up nationwide.
"It is the answer to messy bathrooms and a house filled with that dreaded wet dog smell," he said.
The machine was environmentally friendly with a catchment area that stopped dog-hair from being washed down the drain.
