A Danish family enjoyed their traditional Christmas celebration in a Picton camping ground, complete with a Christmas tree.

Picton Top 10 camping ground owner-operator Roger Kett said the family saw him trimming trees in the playground on Christmas Eve and asked if they could have a small branch for a Christmas tree. He went one better and cut them a pine.

Pia Gram Elvekjaer said Christmas in the sunshine was a novelty for his family, more used to temperatures of 0-5 degrees Celsius at this time of the year at their home near Copenhagen.

Andreas Gram Peters, 12, said he was enjoying the camping ground's swimming pool, trampoline and table tennis table. The couple's Marlborough-style Christmas menu included Cloudy Bay pinot noir and chocolates from the Makana factory in Rapaura, near Blenheim.
