Property developer Earl Hagaman has a passion for the Marlborough region.
Even though he calls Christchurch home, he owns a home and several other properties in Marlborough. One of those is the Mariners Mall, in Picton, which he has built up since 1984.
Mr Hagaman has been made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) in the New Year honours list for services to business.
He is executive chairman of the Scenic Hotel Group, which operates the Scenic Hotel Marlborough in Blenheim, and has been involved in hospitality and tourism for more than 30 years.
The Scenic group has grown to become the largest entirely New Zealand-owned and operated hotel chain with accommodation across the country.
The company holds the lease to manage the Marlborough Convention Centre. Lani Hagaman said yesterday her husband enjoyed his part in managing the centre and working with Destination Marlborough to grow the region.
"Marlborough is such a beautiful region with a beautiful climate, we spend a good chunk of the year in the region and just love it," Mrs Hagaman said.
Mr Hagaman is worth an estimated $180 million, according to the NBR Rich List 2013, and in 2009 became the sole recipient to date of a New Zealand Hotel Industry Achievement Award.
He has also been involved in a wide range of philanthropic causes, contributing millions of dollars to community and sporting groups and health research.
