Caravan smashed in high winds
"Unreal" winds near Kaikoura have tipped over a caravan and posed challenging conditions for others in the area.
The caravan crash was reported near Hapuku, about 14km north of Kaikoura, on State Highway 1 at 1.16pm today.
Fire Service spokesman Riwai Grace said the caravan suffered "major injuries and will probably never be used again" but the people inside were fortunately as "good as gold".
The owners were thanking their lucky stars that their caravan was the only casualty although it put paid to their camping trip - they were heading to Sandy Bay just north of where the accident happened.
Metservice issued a strong wind warning for Marlborough today, withdamaging gusts of up to 140 kmh in exposed places expected.
The severe northwesterlies were due to ease later today, but were still causing challenges mid-afternoon with people reportedly having trouble standing up in some places, Grace said.
"It's unreal up there."
No other wind-related incidents had been reported to firefighters so far though, he said.
