A 20-year-old man was clocked doing more than double the speed limit during a police chase in Marlborough at the weekend.
A police spokeswoman said the Blenheim man was driving a Nissan Silvia with two passengers when he was spotted doing donuts and burnouts along Neal Rd in Rarangi early Saturday morning.
The car had no warrant of fitness and its rear tyres were bald.
The driver, a labourer, failed to stop for police and sped off, the spokeswoman said.
He drove to Old Renwick Rd, then to Colemans Rd and Middle Renwick Rd before finally stopping at Aerodrome Rd.
He passed through a range of speed zones and was clocked doing more than 140kmh in a 70kmh zone, the spokeswoman said.
He was arrested at 1.30am and charged with sustained loss of traction, driving a vehicle at a dangerous speed, operating a vehicle recklessly and failing to stop for police. His car was impounded and his driver's licence suspended.
He was to appear in the Blenheim District Court today.
