Safety first: Bradley Mattson, 16, and Rocky the maltese-cross wear their lifejackets when they venture out onto the water.

Rocky the maltese-cross puppy is one of the safest dogs in Marlborough.

At eight months he has his own life jacket for when he goes rowing or fishing with the family.

Owner Robyn Adams, of Blenheim, said Rocky was a member of the family and everyone in the family needed to be protected.

The family has a bach at Te Awaiti Bay in Tory Channel and when they are there, a lot of time is spent on the water, she said.

"I hoped Rocky would be company for me when we are down there, but it turned out he loved the boats and kept going fishing with the boys," Mrs Adams said.

She noticed one of their neighbours had bought a life jacket for their dog and asked where she could get one for Rocky.

"I got it on Trade Me and with postage it only cost me about $26 - people spend more than that on take out.

"A size small fits Rocky perfectly and he shouldn't outgrow it," she said.

Some people might think it silly because dogs are natural swimmers, but swimming against a current wasn't easy, she said.

When Rocky is done paddling and swimming with her sons, he is dried off and even has a special jersey to wear to warm up.

"The same way my children dry off and change to warm up, so does Rocky - he is part of the family and we are responsible to take care of him the best we can," Mrs Adams said.
