A 22-year-old Blenheim man was sentenced to six months' supervision when he appeared in the Blenheim District Court on Tuesday.

Ashton Johnmayne Daley pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving, after driving at speeds of up to twice the speed limit in Blenheim on December 30.

Police said the Redwoodtown man was seen by members of the public speeding at approximately 100kmh in a 50kmh zone at about 6.45pm.

He had been heading north on Stephenson St before being seen by another member of the public driving at about 90kmh along Grove Rd.

As he approached the intersection of Grove Rd and Nelson St, which is a roundabout, Daley was observed driving in the left-turn only lane.

Instead of turning left, he continued straight through the roundabout, cutting off another driver.

He then headed towards Picton, reaching speeds of 160kmh between Spring Creek and Tuamarina, where he also overtook two other vehicles on double yellow lines.

Police located Daley about two hours later in a heavily intoxicated state.

In explanation, he told police he had been very intoxicated at the time.

Judge Bruce Davidson also disqualified Daley from driving for six months.
