Vandals who destroyed a public toilet at Liz Davidson Place in Blenheim have cost ratepayers more than $1300.

Council reserves and amenities manager Rosie Bartlett said it would cost $1350 to repair the 24-hour toilet that was vandalised on Christmas Day.

The toilet was expected to be operational by yesterday evening after a temporary door handle for the toilet was installed.

A permanent door handle replacement had been ordered.

Locks and tiles at the Queen St toilet block were smashed, pipes broken and cisterns ripped off the walls.

The cedar-and-stone toilet block opened in December 2012.
