A Blenheim man staying at a backpackers woke up to find his room had been burgled while he slept, police say.
Constable Andrew Holdaway of Blenheim said the man was staying at Triple Links Accommodation at John St, Blenheim.
He locked his door and opened his window before he went to bed, but when he awoke about 1am the door was open. His cell phone, wallet, cigarettes and hat had been taken while he slept.
The theft happened between 11am on Sunday and 1am on Monday, Mr Holdaway said.
Triple Links owner Colin Musgrove said the man and his mate were sharing the four-bed room.
It would be a bit of a squeeze to climb through the window but it was possible, Mr Musgrove said.
Theft at the backpackers has been rare in the six years he had owned it. rooms were kept locked and most of the windows were too small to climb through, he said.
Police are investigating the theft.
