A 52-year-old Blenheim man who was airlifted to Nelson Hospital after a head-on crash near Renwick on Tuesday night is in a stable condition.

The man suffered ''multi-trauma'' injuries after the car he was in collided with another car on the Wairau River bridge about 6.30pm.

A hospital spokeswoman said this morning the man was in a stable condition in Nelson Hospital.

Both the man and the driver of the other car, a teenager, had to be cut from their vehicles by firefighters.

The teenager was taken to Wairau Hospital in Blenheim and was discharged yesterday, the spokeswoman said.

Police were still investigating the cause of the crash.
