A 74-year-old man was airlifted to Nelson Hospital with a serious head injury after he fell off his bicycle in the Sounds yesterday.

The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was called to Double Bay in the Kenepuru Sounds at 5.30pm.

Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter base manager and pilot Tim Douglas-Clifford said the man was visiting from the USA and was on a siteseeing ride when he came off his bike and landed heavily on his head.

‘‘It was quite bad, quite serious.’’

Mr Douglas-Clifford believed the man had come down the hill on the track and lost control.

He was found laying on the ground, he said.

He couldn’t confirm whether or not the man had lost consciousness.

The man was assessed and treated at the scene by the helicopter’s onboard intensive care paramedic.

He was then flown to Nelson Hospital for further treatment.

The hospital confirmed today he was a stable condition.
