About 20 firefighters battled a scrub fire in the Marlborough Sounds on Sunday.
Marlborough Kaikoura principal rural fire officer Richard McNamara said an investigation was under way to determine the cause of the fire at Melville Cove, in Port Gore, at the northern end of the Marlborough Sounds.
Rural fire force crews from Kenepuru, Waitaria Bay, Linkwater and Blenheim were called out about 11am and stayed at the scene for more than five hours, Mr McNamara said.
Two helicopters used monsoon buckets to dump water on the blaze.
Firefighters had it under control after an hour, but stayed at the scene to stomp out the hot spots and ensure it didn't reignite, he said.
