Four men were stranded in a boat for more than four hours in the Marlborough Sounds on Sunday in gale force winds.

Marlborough Coastguard president Dick Chapman said the men had been fishing near Stephens Island on a 10-metre launch. The engine broke down and the steering arm broke about 10am, he said.

Coastguard was called about noon after the men radioed for help.

Five Coastguard crew reached the launch on the rescue boat about 2.30pm and towed the launch to French Pass.
