A 17-year-old man was taken to hospital after a jet boat he was in crashed into a bridge near Blenheim.

The crash happened on the Wairau River Bridge on State Highway 1 at Spring Creek about 12.30pm yesterday.

A police spokeswoman said two men, aged 17 and 42, were in the boat powering along the river when they swerved to avoid a branch in the water. The boat glanced off the bridge pillar, knocking one of the men off his seat, she said.

The 17-year-old had a deep gash to his foot and was taken to Wairau Hospital, in Blenheim. He was treated and discharged.

St John Marlborough territory manager Murray Neal said the 42-year-old man was treated at the scene for a minor cut. The boat was not seriously damaged.
