Cut-price NMIT courses up for grabs
Future students looking to test the waters of study are being offered a 93 per cent discount at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology.
NMIT listed courses on discount voucher website GrabOne yesterday, with 12 different courses listed for $49 each. All courses have full prices of about $760.
Director of marketing and customer services Sandra Williams said NMIT was offering the heavily discounted courses "to give people a taster of what it might be like to study, we have it for people where price is a barrier".
NMIT had offered discounted courses in the past but this was the first time it had used the GrabOne website to sell them.
They were only available for 48 hours at a time through the website but she said they would put the offer up again.
The courses on offer were in business, IT and arts and media. Future students could only choose one course at this discounted rate.
Ms Williams said the discounted classes tied in with the diplomas or degrees students were enrolled in, and students who took a place on a discounted course would be joining classes that were already running.
If they successfully completed the course they would get credit for it, and if they decided to continue their study the credit would go towards a diploma or degree.
Ms Williams said last year a few students who enrolled in courses at the discounted rate went on to further studies at NMIT.
Some of the courses on offer at this rate were in accounting, economics, marketing, management, PC maintenance, graphic design and digital photography.
NMIT was offering under 10 places on courses that required equipment, such as graphic design, or PC maintenance.
The business courses, that were held in large classrooms, had between 50 and 100 places available, she said.
There was an entry criteria for entry into the courses, and she did not expect there to be too many people who paid for the course but did not complete it.
In the past "it worked out OK", she said.
"We selected these courses because we think they are areas people want to have a taster in."
