More than 700 people crowded Whites Bay yesterday during the annual More FM Beach Day.

More FM Breakfast host and event co-ordinator Natasha Knox said that the sunny day and cool breeze made for the perfect day.

"We were amazed by the turnout and really happy to see so many families come to spend the day on the beach and have fun."

The annual beach dig and sandcastle competition drew hundreds of entrants, she said.

Blenheim man Michiel Jordaan spent the day on the beach with his family. "It feels like it's a holiday today - the perfect sunny family day and so many sandcastles to look at," he said.

Justine Wilson, of Renwick, and her family spent the weekend at the Whites Bay campground."It's my son's seventh birthday so we decided to make a weekend of it with the weather being so amazing," she said.

Her family entered the sandcastle competition and built a Minion, a character from the Despicable Me movies. "It has been a real family effort with three generations helping to build it and lug sand and water to our build site. We will all be sleeping very well tonight," Mrs Wilson said.

The prize for best sandcastle went to the Fowke family, of Blenheim, for a 3D turtle sandcastle.

Ten-year-old Tayla Fowke said she had a great time building the turtle with her parents. "It was a lot of hard work in the sun and took us almost three hours." .

The lucky draw sandcastle winner, drawn from all entrants, was the Joseph family, also of Blenheim, who created a dinosaur.

The beach dig main prize went to Emma Branel. She won an AvantiPlus hamper with a scooter and helmet.
