Break in at Z
Two men have been caught on camera using a hammer to try and get into a cigarette cabinet at a Blenheim petrol station.
The men smashed a window at Z Energy Redwoodtown just after midnight yesterday.
Owner Nigel Andrews said CCTV footage showed the pair jumping the counter and heading straight for the tobacco cabinet.
They used a hammer to claw at the cabinet door but did not manage to get it open.
They were at the site for about four minutes and then left with nothing, Mr Andrews said.
Police have released pictures of the men, whose faces were uncovered.
Mr Andrews, who owns nine Z Energy stations throughout Marlborough, Nelson and the West Coast, said it was the first attempted burglary at one of his petrol stations in four or five years. "We go to quite big lengths to ensure everything is locked and secure," he said.
Cigarettes and tobacco were probably some of the more expensive items in the store, he said.
Anyone with information is asked to phone Blenheim police on 03 578 5279 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
