Cow killed by train
A freight train hit a cow on the rail track near Kaikoura this morning.
Kiwirail spokeswoman Sarah Pomeroy confirmed the south-bound train hit a cow that was wandering along the rail corridor about 8.35am at Harnett's Rd, just north of Kaikoura.
The cow damaged the train's air lines in the front of the locomotive and the service was delayed for 40 minutes, she said.
The cow was killed in the incident.
It was removed by a rail gang before train services resumed.
There was no history of loose livestock on the track at that part of the network, she said.
