Countdown supermarket in Redwoodtown was broken into on Tuesday night

Another Blenheim business was broken into last night, in the same area as an attempted burglary at a petrol station less than 48 hours earlier.

A man was caught on security camera footage breaking into Countdown supermarket on Weld St, Blenheim, about 11.30pm on Tuesday.

The man smashed a glass window to get inside and, once there, headed straight to the wine section. Three bottles of wine and two pizzas were stolen.

The man left Countdown and headed south. A scene examination was carried out yesterday morning.

In the early hours of Monday morning, two men were caught on camera using a hammer to try to get into a cigarette cabinet at Z Energy Redwoodtown on Scott St.

The men clawed at the cabinet with the hammer but could not get it open.

Marlborough crime prevention team member Senior Constable Al Hendrickson said the two burglaries could be linked.

Both were committed around the same time in the same area. On both occasions the offender smashed a window to get inside.

However, there was no concrete evidence to suggest the same people were involved, Mr Hendrickson said.

Police are still investigating the break-in at Z Energy station, he said.

Anyone with information is asked to phone Blenheim police on 03 578 5279 or to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

UPDATE - Two men have been arrested in connection with these two burglaries.  They are to appear in the Blenheim District Court this morning.  More details to follow
