Burglar grabs beef & beer
A brazen burglar has broken into a Blenheim backpackers and made off with 20 bottles of beer and 50 beef patties, police say.
A man was caught on camera breaking into Koanui Lodge and Backpackers on Main St about 2.15am yesterday.
Hostel manager Luke Morgan said the man was seen trying to open windows before climbing through an open window in the kitchen. Once inside, he took 50 beef patties, 20 bottles of Tui and Export Gold beer, and a bag of food belonging to a guest.
The grocery items were put into his backpack and a cooler bag he also stole.
''It's very disappointing,'' Mr Morgan said.
''These guys don't have a lot of money anyway. No high value items were stolen, but they're high value to them.''
He would be increasing security at the backpackers and making sure all windows and doors were locked at night, he said.
Police carried out a scene examination early this morning.
They released a still image of the man captured on security camera.
He is described as a Pakeha man in his mid-20s wearing a black hoodie with Elwood on the front and Elwood 96 on the back.
His grey stonewash jeans had a hole in the left knee and he wore a pair of olive-coloured crocs.
Police are investigating the theft.
