Bring the family and bikes
The whole family can get out and about this Children's Day on Sunday at a mountain bike family fun day at Conders Bend Mountain Bike Park outside Renwick.
The event is being run by Sport Tasman, Go Marlborough and Marlborough Mountain Bike Club with the aim being to get families out on their bikes, and to promote the track.
Sport Tasman community recreation adviser Sonya Sutherland says the tracks are excellent for all ages and fitness levels.
"They are pretty much all flat. The first section has a few parts that could be challenging for young children but you can easily skip those," she says.
The day out is a good way to finish off Bike Wise Month, be it two days later. The event will feature spot prizes from Bike Wise as well as a free sausage sizzle at the end of your ride, made possible by Active Dads.
Families with children from 3 years old and up are welcome to come along, but anyone wanting to get out for a social ride on the tracks is welcome any time between 11am and 3pm.
The tracks are on council land and are maintained by Marlborough Mountain Bike Club members. They are also open at all times to cyclists.
If parents want to get a bit more exercise they are welcome to run along with their children while they cycle, Sonya says.
Be sure to bring your helmets and water.
Conders Bend is made up of about 6km of well-maintained single track through a pine tree plantation. To access it turn left just before the Wairau River bridge, while travelling from Renwick Havelock on State Highway 6, on to the gravel stopbank road. Signs will be put out on SH6 on the day.
If raining, there will be some great muddy puddles so bring a raincoat. If rain is torrential or there are strong winds it will be postponed to March 9. Check Sport Tasman's Facebook page on the day if you are unsure.
