Blenheim rural fire force spent five hours in the Awatere Valley yesterday making sure a fire lit before Christmas did not re-ignite.
Deputy rural fire officer John Foley said firefighters were told on Wednesday night that an old forestry skid site - a log path used to remove logs from a hilly forest - was smouldering.
The fire had been lit before Christmas on the Welds Hill Rd site to burn old branches and tidy up the area.
It was more of a mop-up job as the area was still smouldering.
Firefighters went to the site about 7.30am yesterday and dug up the dirt with a digger.
The fire had the potential to spread as it was surrounded by paddocks.
