Traffic was backed up on State Highway 1 for about 2 kilometres last night after a serious crash north of Kaikoura.

The head-on crash, involving a four-wheel drive vehicle and a campervan, happened just after 4pm.

The male driver of the campervan was flown to Wellington Hospital in a serious condition while the sole occupant of the four-wheel drive was flown to Christchurch Hospital, also in a serious condition. Both men had to be cut from their vehicles.

Emergency staff said the 73-year-old driver of the campervan, from Paraparaumu, suffered leg injuries but remained conscious and was talking throughout as he was cut free. His wife, 68, was not injured, but was badly shaken.

The 26-year-old driver of the 4WD had not regained consciousness before being airlifted by Westpac rescue helicopter to Christchurch. He had a serious head injury.
