Man missing in Sounds
An aluminium boat with a 55-year-old Marlborough man onboard has gone missing in the Marlborough Sounds.
A police spokeswoman said the man left Erie Bay, in Tory Channel, on the 9 metre boat about 4pm on Saturday.
Police have no idea where the man planned to go and will begin an aerial search today.
He is believed to have left the Sounds after the Marlborough harbourmaster and commercial boats searched the area and found no sign of the boat, the spokeswoman said.
The man's behaviour was out of character, she said.
He is an experienced seaman and both weather and sea conditions had been good.
The aluminium boat is called Erie and has a hard top, which is painted white.
It has a blue stripe along the side and an inboard diesel engine.
The boat's fuel tanks are capable of travelling an ''extensive distance'', the spokeswoman said.
Police would like to speak with anyone who has seen the boat or anyone who has information that might help find it.
Anyone with information should call Blenheim Police 03 578 5279.
