Three 19-year-old women remain in hospital after the car they were in ploughed through a Marlborough camping ground.

The crash happened about 12.20am yesterday on Rapaura Rd/State Highway 62 in front of the Spring Creek Holiday Park.

Holiday park resident Kaylene Herriot was watching TV in her awning when she heard the sound of metal scraping on the road as a car hurtled through bushes bordering the campground.

"I could see the lights coming towards me," she said.

"I started screaming and then I went out and heard them screaming, too."

The three teens were trapped in a Mazda car, which had flipped onto its side and come to a stop lodged between trees and scrub.

The car had been heading toward the SH1 intersection in the 70kmh zone when it appeared the driver lost control on a bend.

Mrs Herriot's husband got a torch as a passerby began cutting the trees surrounding the car with a chainsaw.

Blenheim volunteer firefighters arrived at the scene and helped cut the teens from the car.

St John Marlborough territory manager Murray Neal said one of the women was flown to Wellington Hospital in a serious condition with chest and leg injuries.

A hospital spokesman said yesterday afternoon the woman was in a stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit.

The two other women were taken to Wairau Hospital, in Blenheim.

One was in a serious condition with head injuries while the other was in a moderate condition with multiple arm fractures.

A hospital spokeswoman said yesterday afternoon both were in a stable condition.

A police spokesman said the cause of the accident was being investigated by a serious crash investigator.

One of the women was from Blenheim and another was from the Nelson region, he said.

He did not know where the third woman was from.
