The weather is expected to deteriorate as Cyclone Lusi moves east.
Tropical Cyclone Lusi, which was downgraded to a depression yesterday, is sitting west of Taranaki and will track south and east during the day, MetService meteorologist Elke Louw said.
There are isolated showers in upper and central parts of the North Island, and heavy rain over Nelson which would ease this afternoon, she said.
Wellington area is experiencing the calm before the storm.
Warnings are in place for Marlborough Sounds, Wellington, and Wairarapa south of Masterton, as gusts up to 130kph and heavy rain are expected to come through by 7pm.
Canterbury region also has a warning in place for heavy rain.
