The 16-year-old boy, who was stabbed in Picton on Saturday night, is in a stable condition is Wairau Hospital today.

A hospital spokesman said he was expected to be discharged within the next two days.

The incident occurred outside Picton's skatepark on the corner of Wairau Rd and Auckland St.

A 28-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the stabbing.

A St John Ambulance spokesman said the victim was taken to Wairau Hospital by ambulance about 10.45pm with a single stab wound to his back.

Police communications spokeswoman Barbara Dunn said the suspect was located by police soon after the stabbing and arrested.

He was was charged with wounding causing grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

An investigation into the incident was under way, she said.
