A 26-year-old man is still in a serious but stable conditon in Christchurch Hospital following a head-on crash north of Kaikoura, almost two weeks ago.
A hospital spokesman confirmed the man underwent surgery the day after but was still in Intensive Care Unit today after the four-wheel-drive he was driving and a campervan collided on a bend at Mangamaunu, on State Highway 1, about 4.15pm on Thursday, March 6.
The 73-year-old driver of the campervan died on Friday, March 7 in Wellington Hospital after suffering leg injuries from being trapped in the vehicle.
He was David Orchard of Paraparaumu.
His wife, 68, who was a passenger in the campervan, was not hurt.
The younger driver had not regained consciousness before being airlifted to Christchurch, and had suffered a serious head injury and a fractured femur, she said.
Police said the he had been travelling from Queenstown to Hastings to see family.
