Joel Lawrence Kite, 19, admitted a charge of theft in the Blenheim District Court yesterday.
Mr Harris said Kite was at the Loft Bar, as was the victim of the theft, who put down her bag while she went to dance.
Kite picked up the bag and went into the toilets, where he took about $250 cash, a cellphone, a passport and other identification cards from the bag.
He was confronted by the victim's friends, and then spoken to by a passing police patrol.
He offered no explanation for the theft.
Judge Davidson sentenced Kite to six months' supervision and ordered him to pay $250 in reparation for the cash.
