Rig to unload in bay
Another drilling rig to be used in the Taranaki offshore oil fields is expected to arrive in Pelorus Sound's Admiralty Bay today where it would be unloaded before being towed by the Port Taranaki tug Tukana back to Taranaki where it will be used by New Zealand Oil and Gas.
Offloading the rig required a sheltered location, OMV said, and it planned to use Admiralty Bay, where it had done similar float-offs and float-ons previously.
The company said it had a proven track record of safely operating within the Marlborough District with numerous float-off operations.
Marlborough harbourmaster Alex van Wijngaarden went to Admiralty Bay yesterday in preparation for the ship's arrival today. He said it would be very similar to the Kan Tan IV operation last year.
Any biosecurity risks were the responsibility of border control staff rather than the council and there would be safeguards against any foreign organisms being introduced.
