'Medical episode' led to crash
A 4WD car crashed into another vehicle, hit a power pole and flipped onto its roof in central Blenheim yesterday, police say.
Marlborough highway patrol team leader Sergeant Barrie Greenall said it appeared the 44-year-old man driving a Toyota Surf 4WD had a "medical episode" before he lost control near the Sinclair St and Alfred St roundabout at 11.35am.
The Toyota hit the back of a Honda CRV 4WD, continued past it, then hit a streetlight which toppled over and left the Toyota on its roof on Sinclair St, near the Blenheim skate park, Greenall said
The Honda went off the road and came to a stop in a roadside garden. A woman driving the Honda was not injured, Greenall said.
St John Blenheim station manager Rebecca Lee said the man was conscious when paramedics arrived and was taken to Wairau Hospital in Blenheim for observation. He was not injured, she said.
Two fire engines, two ambulances and about four police cars were at the scene.
Traffic was backed up in both directions, with one motorist saying the accident had delayed his travel by about 30 minutes.
Police are investigating.
