A lifejacket loan stand will open next month at the Waikawa Boating Club thanks to a donation by the Picton Girl Guides and an anonymous donor.
Boaties and people doing watersport activities in the Marlborough Sounds can borrow the lifejackets to keep them safe on the water. Thirty lifejackets will be available, from child size 6 to adult size 16.
Those who use them will be asked to give a gold coin donation, which will go towards Girl Guide funds.
The guides raised $2500 to buy the jackets though "bob-a-job" activities including washing cars and kayaks, mowing lawns and cleaning windows. Their fundraising was matched by the anonymous donor.
Girl Guides Blenheim co-ordinator Helen Ashworth said the Girl Guides previously had to borrow lifejackets from the local Scouts.
"Girl Guides in Marlborough do a lot of water-based activities. The girls are not allowed on the water without lifejackets. I am passionate about instilling safety on the water so kids can influence their parents. The lifejackets are bright pink to show you can be fashionable and safe on the water."
