The road between Kaikoura and Picton has been reopened but roading contractors Downer Kaikoura are warning drivers to exercise extreme caution and courtesy to other drivers.

The road is being described as 'marginal' and could be re-closed at any time.

Grant Keeble, of Downer, said there was significant surface flooding still on the road this morning despite a break in the rain, because the drains were full of silt and debris from the slips, which meant the water had nowhere to go.

Awatere Valley Road open - essential 4WD traffic only

Awatere Valley Road above the Medway is open to essential travel only using 4WD vehicles. 2WD, towing vehicles and HCV vehicles will find the road difficult to negotiate.

The road has sustained damage, in some places is extremely slippery and very narrow in other places.

Further repair work will begin on Tuesday.

All roads that have recently been re opened should be used with extreme care as there will be further repair works needed.

Coastal Pacific passengers should check  bookings@kiwirailscenic.co.nz or ring 0800 250 000.
