Grant helps volunteers find answers
If you have the question, the Citizens Advice Bureau Marlborough has the answer.
This is the motto by which the helpful staff at the bureau work.
The volunteer-run bureau received a great financial boost the week before last with a grant of $4500 from the Lottery Grants Board.
Long-time volunteer and bureau publicity officer, Alan McEvoy, said they received funding from the Lottery Grants Board each year and it was greatly appreciated. The bureau operates solely on funding from such grants.
The lottery grant, which will go toward the general running costs, represents a quarter of their $18,000 a year running costs.
Run by a group of 35 dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers, the bureau dispenses an invaluable and often under-recognised service to New Zealanders and foreigners alike. Last year the Marlborough bureau assisted almost 4000 people with a host of queries ranging from employment issues to advice on consumer rights.
"We are here for everyone and for just about every question. If we can't answer you ourselves then we will find out who can or where to access that information," said Alan.
The Marlborough bureau was established in 1979 and offers a free and confidential service in a non-judgmental way. New bureau volunteers receive 12 weeks of intensive training, with ongoing training being given throughout the year.
"Our trained advisers can help people with information on almost any issue including consumer rights, work and unemployment, budgeting, finance and tax, health and counselling, housing and tenancy and much more. No problem is too big or too small," said Marlborough bureau treasurer, Mike Pink.
There are 85 bureaus around New Zealand, providing free and confidential information, advice, advocacy and support to more than half a million people every year.
The Marlborough bureau is keen to hear from anyone interested in becoming a CAB volunteer.
Full training and ongoing support is provided.
People from all ages and backgrounds are welcome.
Citizens Advice Bureau Marlborough is at 25 Alfred Street, Blenheim and is open from 9.30am to 4pm Monday to Friday.
