An act of mindless vandalism at the top of Tom's Track has got Trees For Travellers manager Kevin Cole seething.
Five cabbage trees, varying in age, have been hacked down in what Mr Cole says is an example of absolute stupidity.
The trees had been planted by the Trees For Travellers programme at the top of the walking track on Scarborough St.
Mr Cole believes the attack took place some time over the past three weeks. However, it was not reported to him until last Monday so it may have been more recent than that.
Of the five trees, two were well established and were probably more than 10 years old, Mr Cole said.
The other three were smaller and ranged in age from about two or three years to about seven.
The total estimated cost if the trees were to be replaced could be anywhere between $500 and $800, but Mr Cole said this did not factor in the care and maintenance lost which would amount to some considerable time and effort from a number of people.
Also to be considered were the donations of the travellers who had paid $40 for each tree as part of the Trees For Travellers scheme and had done so thinking their tree would remain a part of Kaikoura long after they had passed through town on their trip.
Mr Cole said it was sad to think that people in the area had such little respect and consideration for the trees, and for the people who planted and looked after them.
Trees further down the track, some of which were much larger examples of cabbage trees, had been left unscathed and this suggested the act was an opportunistic one.
Much smaller trees of other species which were planted near the damaged cabbage trees were also left untouched.
Kaikoura police have been informed of the damage and they are keen to hear from anyone who has any relevant information which would help them find those responsible.
