Damage and vandalism to traffic signs around the district is causing concern for Kaikoura District Council asset manager Gallo Saidy, who says it is becoming a constant problem.

Mr Saidy told council last week that at least two signs were being damaged or stolen each week, which equated to costs of more than $1000 per month.

Not only did the cost of the signs themselves have to be met but there was also a significant outlay for reinstalling them.

Mr Saidy said the signs were there for both direction and safety and said the damage and graffiti was becoming a pattern.

If it continued, he said, it would be a huge cost to the taxpayer.

Over the past couple of weeks the street sign at Austin St on the peninsula has been stolen, along with a couple at Kekerengu.

On Monday morning a speed sign was damaged and dumped in Churchill Park.
