Kaikoura Primary School's year four students are buzzing after winning a writing competition recently.
The students went on a trip with Whale Watch Kaikoura in August and wrote an article about their experience which they decided to enter into a competition run by the Education Gazette.
The Education Gazette is a weekly magazine printed by the Ministry of Education and distributed to all schools nationwide.
The competition was called The Best School Trip Ever for Education Outside the Classroom, and the students' article won them $250 to be put towards education outside the classroom for next year.
The article detailed the trip from start to finish, including naming the two whales they saw, describing the birds and a pod of dolphins they encountered as well as talking about a fishing boat they went to see.
They also explained how the captain of the boat found the whales by listening through a hydrophone which he dropped over the side of the boat.
There was a huge number of entrants but the Kaikoura Primary School article outshone the rest, which both the children and the school are absolutely thrilled about.
