Kaikoura police are appealing for information about the theft of a boat last Monday night.
The 12ft 6 aluminium pontoon dinghy was stolen from the beach on South Bay Parade on the night of the Kaikoura races.
It had been securely chained up and stored upside down on the beach. The thieves cut the padlock with bolt cutters, before sliding it down into the water and pulling it out about 250m further down the beach onto a trailer or other form of transport.
The boat is described as a one-off, purpose-built boat, made by a Kaiapoi company, with two built-in seats which double as storage compartments.
It had no oars or outboard motor.
The bottom is painted black and it is similar in design to a surf lifesaving boat, but made from aluminium.
Constable Dean Schroder said he believed it would have taken at least two people to commit the theft due to the fact it had been dragged from the water and up the beach.
Any information regarding the whereabouts of the boat would be gratefully received by police.
