Three people were caught for drink-driving offences over the weekend.
On Saturday morning a 52-year-old Christchurch man was apprehended after a local businessman raised the alarm with police.
The man was in a hire car which he had hired from Queenstown on October 23. He had understood that because he was told the car had unlimited miles, he could continue to use it and did not return it. As well as finding himself in trouble over the car, he registered an excess breath alcohol level of 855mg per litre of breath, more than twice the legal limit.
On the same day two local men were also arrested for drink driving offences, both also with high levels of alcohol in their system.
Kaikoura Police Constable Lindsay Tilbury said this should act as a timely reminder that, with Christmas and New Year looming, people should be aware that police will be out in force testing drivers.
He said with a good taxi service in town there was very little excuse for people still be driving when they know they are intoxicated.
Police arrested a local man for the four car break-in a couple of weeks ago at various points in town.
