The popular spud in the bag competition is almost upon us again.

Those wanting to better their attempts from last year or green-fingered spud growers who think they can beat the rest, can submit their entries this week.

Seed potatoes can be picked up from CRT on Friday from 10am to 2pm or Saturday from 10am to midday. Come and choose your own to give yourself the best chance.

Entries cost $10 and all proceeds go to Kaikoura youth activities. The grand weigh-in will be on March 20 at 10am at Kaikoura Primary School, followed by the prize giving and potato auction.

There was some stiff competition last year.

Entries ranged from very impressive to somewhat mediocre, with everyone discussing their tips for success. The winning entry, however, was actually forgotten about in the corner of the garden for months so there is perhaps no guarantee that talking to or fertilising your potato is necessarily the key to winning.

The only rule is that you must leave your spud in the bag provided and bring the complete package to the weigh-in, where the Lions Club of Seaward Kaikoura, will preside over the official scales and count the spuds.

Prizes will be awarded for the following categories: Adults and Children: Grand Champion $50, Runner up $25, Most spuds $25, Total Weight $25, Heaviest spud $25.
