Bank of New Zealand branches and store offices were "closed for good" on Wednesday, November 4 as a nationwide initiative was rolled out in which BNZ staff were encouraged to get out in their local communities and help with projects such as painting, cleaning and gardening.

From mid-August to September 27, people from all over New Zealand submitted more than 850 ideas for community projects.

The Kaikoura branch of the BNZ was closed for good while its seven staff set to sprucing up the community by helping out on a couple of different painting projects. These included 19 of the Lions Club seats around the town and a relocated building at the pony club site on Rorrisons Rd.

Branch manager Gina Atkins said while it had taken a lot of organisation liaising with customers and the Reserve Bank before the day, it had been a worthwhile achievement and had made a difference to the look of the community.

BNZ staff are allocated two volunteer days per year, on which they can get out and about to help members of the community, and this was one of them.
