Kaikoura High School Year 9 students had a hands-on learning experience last week when John Orchard, from Heritage Education in Blenheim, came to the school to stage a re-enactment of the Wairau Affray.

The students spent an hour in the classroom learning about both sides of the Marlborough land wars before heading out to the playing field where they were treated to a first-hand experience of the weapons which would have been used, including muskets and swords.

The students re-enacted the scene with a mock battle which they thoroughly enjoyed as Mr Orchard talked them through each stage piece by piece.

Teacher Marcello Cecchi said this was a great way for the students to learn about important historical events, both for themselves and their unique New Zealand identity.
